Knitting Patterns
What can be considered the soul of the knitting process? Its
not the yarn, despite the fact the yarn helps determine the
look and feel of the knitting project. And its not the needles,
though they are the instruments used for knitting. Instead, it
is the knitting pattern. In fact, it is through knitting
patterns that designers communicate how one can go about
creating their brand of garments or crafts. Without knitting
patterns knitters wont know how to do which stitches in which
row.
So, what are knitting patterns like? Well, simply put,
knitting patterns come in two forms: textual and chart-based.
Textual knitting patterns can be confusing for beginning
knitters, but once they get the hang of their style they become
readable. Basically, textual knitting patterns start by
displaying a row. This is followed by which side the person
needs to knit on. After this textual knitting instructions
almost look like an algebra problem. They use either K or P in
front of a the number of whatever row is being represented. K
stands for Knit Stitch while P stands for Purl stitch. These
are the two basic types of stitches one uses when they go about
knitting. Charts explain all of this information in a visual
format, which can be a lot clearer for many knitters. However,
most of the readily available knitting patterns will come in
textual form.
As far as what you can get knitting patterns for, there
really is no limit. The most popular knitting patterns are
usually for baby blankets, sweaters, scarves and afghans.
However, there are also knitting patterns for shorts, hats and
crafting projects involving a level of knitting. Basically, if
there is something that can be knitted, you can count on there
being a knitting pattern for it.
How can you find knitting patterns? If you dont mind paying
money, you can get a whole slew of them in a knitting pattern
book. Usually these will include dozens to hundreds of knitting
patterns. The cost for such books is really no different than
any other type of book, as they can be as low as $5 to as high
as $30. Of course, if youd rather not pay for a set of knitting
patterns, you can also get them online. This is because there
are many free knitting patterns that are available for
distribution. Just make sure you know what rights you have when
you download such knitting patterns. Why? Its because some
designers only allow their knitting patterns to be distributed
to those who are knitting for personal fun. If the person
proceeds to sell the project that is being knitted, they could
risk infringing on that designers trademark or copyright. This
could lead to legal problems in the future.
When you get proficient at knitting, provided that you have
a talent for knowing how to put the right stitches together,
consider creating your own knitting patterns. If your knitting
designs are particularly stylish and unique, you could even
sell them.
