Knitting Needles
Without a good set of knitting needles, you can forget about
doing any type of knitting project. The only problem is there
are so many knitting needles available, that new knitters might
be confused and overwhelmed at which set they need to get. But
with just a little bit of background knowledge, the process of
getting knitting needles does not have to be difficult.
Specifically, you should know about: the types of knitting
needles on the market, the materials they come in and their
sizes.
Three types of knitting needles are used in knitting
projects. These are: straight knitting needles, circular
knitting needles and double-pointed knitting needles. Straight
knitting needles are what you need when you are working on
smaller projects. Examples could be baby blankets or scarves.
Circular knitting needles are designed with two points that
connect through a cord. They are good for much bigger project
such as large afghans. Their unique design also tends to be
more comfortable for the knitters wrists. Lastly,
double-pointed knitting needles are designed as their namesake
indicates. This means that their tips contain pointed metal
needles. You use these types of knitting needles when you are
making socks.
In terms of the materials used for knitting needles, there
are many. The cheapest are those made out of plastic. They tend
to be nosier than other types of knitting needles, but their
lightweight nature makes for an excellent feel for beginning
knitters. This is in contrast to metal knitting needles,
another type of knitting needle that is inexpensive. While
their firmness and strength do well with big projects, their
feel is cold and heavy.
More expensive knitting needles will be made out of wood,
bamboo or even glass. Of these options the wooden knitting
needles tend to be the favorite of most knitters because they
have a very warm feel. Bamboo knitting needles also have a warm
feel, but tend to be heavy like metal knitting needles. On the
other hand, glass knitting needles have a more smooth feel.
They start off with a cold touch, but warm as the knitter
continues to use them. However, being that they are made of
glass, there is a chance that they could break if they are
dropped.
The size of knitting needles are determined on a scale
between 0 and 15. Zero is the smallest knitting needle size,
while 15 is the largest. Occasionally, there might be knitting
needles that surpass 15. However, they are not as common in
American knitting stores. The exception is if a person goes to
a specialty knitting store. There they should be able to find
the size that they need.
So, there you have it you now have basic knowledge of what
is involved with the world of knitting needles. This means you
should not feel intimidated the next time you visit a sewing
store or shop online for your perfect set of knitting needles.
However, even if you do have more confidence in what to look
for, dont be afraid to try more than one knitting needle. This
is because youll want to discover which feel is best for you.
And the only way to do this is to keep trying different
ones.
